Is the solution to our housing crisis converting old office space?
Serving Families across San Diego County since 2014
Is it possible to repurpose empty office space for much-needed housing?
The City of San Diego halted negotiations for the redevelopment of 101 Ash St. This vacant office space has been a significant headache for years, costing taxpayers big time.
San Diego teamed up with Reven Capital to transform 101 Ash into 393 low-income residential units. Converting office space into housing sounds great, especially with the rise of remote work and office vacancies. But as we see, it's not a walk in the park.
After months of talks, the city walked away due to concerns about financial risk. This underscores the challenges of office conversions—cheaper, yes, but trickier.
Now, the city has brought in a consultant to map out a vision for 101 Ash and its surroundings. This is a step toward finding a viable solution and a developer to take on the project.
